Description
Bio-Pycnogenol contains 40mg of a patented extract from the bark of the French maritime pine Pinus pinaster.
Bio-Pycnogenol also contains a unique blend of water-soluble naturally occurring bioflavonoids and fruit acids. These bioflavonoids and fruit acids can be found in other fruits and vegetables, but not in the same raw material and not in the same proportions. Bio-Pycnogenol is a dietary supplement that supports good blood circulation in the body and also helps protect cells from oxidative damage. All Pharma Nord products are manufactured at the company's own factory in Denmark under pharmaceutical control to document quality, safety and efficacy.
What is Pycnogenol?
The extract Pycnogenol is made from the bark of the French maritime pine tree, known in Latin as Pinus pinaster. The trees are grown on 2.5 million acres of plantations in southwest France. The wood from the French maritime pine is used to make furniture and all trees that are cut down are replaced with new plants, meaning that production is sustainable. The bark, which is a by-product of wood production, is used as the raw material in the production of Pycnogenol. It takes approximately 1000 kg of bark to produce 1 kg of Pycnogenol. It is important that the bioflavonoids are extracted from the bark within 48 hours of the tree being cut down. No pesticides are used on the wood and the patented extraction process does not use any toxic solvents.
Pycnogenol is made by taking the outer bark of the trees. The fresh bark is pulverized and an extraction is made with ethanol and water via a patented process. After being thoroughly cleaned, the extract is spray-dried and transformed into a fine brown powder. The extract is then standardized to contain 70% +/-5% of the active plant substances, known as procyanidins.
There are many different types of bioflavonoids in Pycnogenol, such as catechin, epicatechin, flavones and taxifolin. Pycnogenol also contains a variety of fruit acids, including caffeic acid, ferulic acid, gallic acid, coumaric acid and vanillic acid. Both of these bioflavonoids and fruit acids can be found in other fruits and vegetables, but not in the same raw material and not in the same proportions. Pycnogenol helps protect cells from oxidative damage.
What are bioflavonoids?
Bioflavonoids or flavonoids are a group of water-soluble, so-called secondary plant substances that contain flavones. They function as plant pigments and are formed in plants to protect against insect attack and oxidative damage, among other things. Bioflavonoids are found in fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and roots. Bioflavonoids have various health properties that are similar to the properties of vitamins. This group of substances was previously called "vitamin P", where P stands for "permeability" or permeability.
